The devices used in this piece were originally intended to provide technological supplementation to the weaknesses and shortcomings of the human body (whether auditory, locomotive, or linguistic) but are now themselves antiquated and obsolete. As their practical utility has eroded, however, they have come alive in other ways; they remain marked by their particular history, carrying ghost traces of past owners and the material residue of years of use and disuse. Putting these objects to aesthetic rather than utilitarian purposes hopefully allows those qualities to emerge more fully.
